After living in various corners of the country, Michael Owen came to Baltimore to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art. Michael received his BFA in 2004, with a thesis focusing on murals and was well on his way to become the top emerging muralist in the city. In 2008, Michael won a national competition for Baltimore's largest mural, spanning both sides of a 1/4 mile underpass.
Along with a growing portfolio of murals, Michael also transposes his popular minimal, yet expressive style to smaller, hung paintings. Visually, his work uses bold, graphic imagery to pull the viewer into the piece, only to divulge softer and more intimate messages and metaphors. Michael gravitates to the figure in a majority of his work, exploring one's relationship to the people and life around themselves. Typically, less is more in Michael's work as he employs minimalism to access a wider audience, allowing more room for each viewer to insert their own story.
Michael currently lives in Baltimore City with his wife, Shelley and son, Harper. He spends a lot of time along the waterfront or drumming in local clubs with his jazz band.
